I do not understand how making the focal point of accepting another persons based on their sexual behavior makes this a community to be proud of??? (sic)

There is an error in reasoning in this statement. No one is asking people to accept others on the basis of their sexual orientation, shoe size, religion or etc. That statement presumes that people by default do not deserve to be accepted, and that only belong to certain demographic groups qualifies someone for acceptance.

So, yup, an axe murderer does not gain respect or enhance their status simply by being gay or straight or being Jewish or Baptist or whatever. However, any individual who belongs to any of those previously mentioned demographic groups does not LOSE the right to be accepted for the sole reason of belonging to that demographic group. Being part of any particular demographic group need carry no further meaning than belonging to that group.
