I DO: California Faith Leaders Support the Freedom to Marry

from The Mainstream Media Project:

At the November General Election, Californians will decide whether or not same sex marriage should be unconstitutional. Last May the California Supreme Court overturned California’s ban on same-sex marriage. However, a recent initiative was qualified for the California November ballot that would override the historic ruling of the California Court.

Proposition 8, also known as the “Limit on Marriage” Constitutional Amendment, states simply: “Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.”

While groups that support Proposition 8 are calling for Californians to eliminate marriage for same-sex couples, those opposed believe the right to marry is a fundamental human right and that all rights should be extended equally by the government without discrimination.

CA Faith for Equality is a statewide network of congregations, clergy, lay leaders and other people of faith who are committed to equality. They are raising their voices and witness to speak out on the fundamental rights for all Californians.

Is marriage a fundamental right? What is “marriage equality”? Same sex couples now have the right to marry—should it be taken away? Should the government enforce religious beliefs about marriage?
